What is a Service Oriented Architecture?

Dec 6, 2007; George Mason University - www.strassmann.com

The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a design to overcome former limitations by disaggregating databases, communications and applications into separate “services”. Under such an arrangement each of the major components of a corporate system is a stand-alone module constructed with interfaces that are subject to international standards. In SOA any component can call on services by any other component over a shared network. In the case of global commerce, the interconnectivity is managed via Internet using agreed protocols.

My heartfelt condolence to popular folk Singer and Musician Ram Thapa

When I heard an untimely demise of popular folk singer Ram Thapa, i was really shocked and became speechless for a moment. He looked very young and he was very young as well and i couldn't believe. I was great fan of Ram Thapa. I really like his couple of folk songs. He was very creative and talented singer as well as musician. We, Nepali, really lost a talented person from our music field. It was really bad news for the whole nation, especially to Nepali music industry. I love his folk songs like ' katar katar ma' railai ghumera gayo baini ko' etc. I don't understand why such talented and very important people died in young age in Nepal. Ram Thapa was really important person for our music industry, if we don't have talented artist like Ram Thapa then we can't listen creative and every Nepali's heart touching songs and music. In Nepal, It is very bad that government or even people don't remember such a great artiest but when he/she died then we will remember and start to praise his work after his dead. It was happen same to another talented and good vocalist singer Arun Thapa few years ago, it’s really bad. I was really get impressed by his music creation and music. He compose the Om bikram Bista popular songs 'Ma maounta ma' and late Arun Thapa's 'Ritu haru ma timi' and more, his music always hit to common people no matter where people from, even city, villages everywhere, people like his style and true Nepali rythem in his music. I always like his music creation and his songs. We will really miss him. It was great loss for nation and really sad news for all those who loves Nepali folk songs and music. I really want to offer my heartfelt condolences to him and i pray god that his soul may rest in peace. Finally, always remember you Ram Thapa and your songs and music.

New Nepal, an Innovative Nepal

Everyone is talking new Nepal new Nepal. Now days it is common in political, civilian circle about New Nepal. Actually, what is new Nepal? Nepal is still a traditional country, where modernization is really behind compare to developed western world. We have traditional agriculture methods, industries don't have modern upgraded technology and method as well as production capability and still producing goods and services in traditional manner.Nepali society is also very traditional, still thinking towards woman, child, and old people have same kind old thinking.

Nepal is rich in its biodiversity, we have high altitude mountains, hilly region and plain region, we have so many rivers, lakes and our all the region like mountain, hilly region and plain region have its specific significant. There is huge potential in food, fruit production, and food processing. We Nepali should not worry about thinking what we have in this country. We should think what we don't have, the fact is that we don't have good technology, idea, and initiative, courage to exploit our resources and make them productive and fruitful. Now government should focus to develop our own technology. The government and people shouldn't think that we can not develop technology ourselves but government and companies should invest in the field of research and development. We should identify such area where we have great potential and more jobs and we should plan and need to do research about that potentiality. New Nepal is should not be just a slogan. We should imagine what New Nepal would be? In my view, New Nepal means not only politically changed Nepal. We should change every aspect. And more important things are that New Nepal means high technology oriented, innovative New Nepal. We have talented people in Nepal but State could not identify those talents and encourage them. Many talented youth are going abroad for work and better career. They have compulsion because of Nepali politics, anarchy, lack of opportunities and no any productive and scientific activities inside the country. We should think that we can do it. We should start now to make Nepal an innovative and technological country. Government should establish its own R&D body in the field of agriculture, food processing, IT, herbs, and textile, not only in Kathmandu but every our provincial region. There should be fund for R&D purpose to the country’s popular and renowned colleges and universities like Pulchok Engineering, Kathmandu University etc. Government should promote selection system to best colleges and provide them funding to R&D. So, talented students will involve to research and development (R&D) activity and we will have our own technology. Innovation should be our identification. We should be ambitious and should dedicate to achieve our goal. Youth must be involved in innovation; we should always think how to make new technology to particular purpose. Suppose, we need innovation in food processing, we can produce high quality with unique testy juice and drink from our verities of fruits from mountain and hilly part. We can develop in ICT sector. We have many graduates and talented youth in computer programming, database and web technology etc. But they are going abroad because of lack of opportunities. See a simple example, the country like Taiwan; this is tiny country with around same population like Nepal. But they are so innovative. They are innovative in chip technology, computer and hardware technology, electronics etc. Taiwan is renowned as an innovative country that is such a pride to say to its citizen. We, Nepali, have capability, and resources but we are not such an innovative till now. But we can be in near future if we dedicated and determined. If we don’t start now to be an innovative country then when? Our neighbouring China and India is becoming innovative country but we don’t have even initiative and plan. In Nepal, government spending in research and development is still not known. Yes, it’s true that people are so poor and our income is less to spending research and development (R&D). But it is essential to do to develop the country in our own effort. Only political change and drafting new constitution, and making country federal republic, is not a New Nepal. If we have same infrastructure, life standard, technology and education system, and only changed in political system, do you called such a Nepal as a New Nepal? No, we only would say New Nepal when we will be a leading innovative country like Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, for example from Asia. It is fact that we cannot become today an innovative, it takes time but at least we should start now. We should have 10 year or 15 year plan to achieve a goal. Let's generate some idea to make Nepal an innovative country.

Gorkhali knee down!!!

Nepal is always sovereign country. Nepal always practices for peace not only in its territory all over the world through the brave 'Gorkhali' forces. Gorkhali forces always served for peace and justice. Look 1st and 2nd world war, Gorkhali(Nepali forces) fought for justice and peace. Still, Nepali army working many conflict hit nations for peace mission of UN and their work is excellent to establish peace. Nepal army also became supportive for the transition of Nepali conflicts as well. Gorkhali is our identity and our pride. The solders who died fighting for peace and justice is our hero. Gorkhali forces never invade any nation for occupying. They only fought for maintain their sovereignty and peace. Gorkhali forces are always praised all over the world due to its work. As a Nepali, calling themselves Gorkhali is pride because of our great history and it is due to Gorkhali forces. Nepal became always independent because of Gorkhali forces and its bravery. But Upendra Yadav, a so called Madeshi based leader from Tarai said in CA meeting that Gorkhali Knee down first time. Actually,It is saying that Gorkhali force let to chop its throat
but never Knee down to its enemy or opponent. For me, That day was a dark day in the history of brave Nepali and Gorkhali. He dare to say so because of politics of power struggle that our biggest political parties are practicing. All need power and they don't care about anything, I think Girja, Madhav, Prachanda should not hurt by this statement but we general Nepali who always sincere about nation and its independence we feel hurt. Actually, in Tarai, there are thousand of immigrants through out the time after integration of Nepal. Every one saying that Tharu, Dhimal, Rajbanshi etc. are the main original community in Terai. But others are immigrant. Though many people are immigrants, They are Nepali because they are living there more than 100 years. They have contribution to the Terai as well. But they don't have right to claim a separate state. It is true that many people from Tarai are marginalize and there should be a proper policy and plan to uplift and empowerment the people of Tarai that we all Nepali realizes but demanding separate state is not a acceptable to all Nepali including the native people of Tarai like Tharu, Dhimal, they are protesting against One Madesh state. I don't want to say they are not Nepali. But there is some leaders from Tarai , They don't have any agenda for politics , they are dull in terms of idea to uplift the poor people of Terai and they are just doing politics to invoke poor people from Tarai and enjoy in the politics and power.I want to remember some Tarai leaders who are becoming powerful minister since the changes in 1990 till date like Bijaya Gachhedar, Mahanta Thakur etc , and now i want to ask what they did for Madhesi poor people that has long term effect to uplift the poor Madhesi. I think nothing. They only serve their own family , cronies , cadres. They are only doing politics for themselves and now they have foreign support with ill motive of foreigners that every Nepali realizes. So, It is not a way to go to serve poor Madhesi people. They need education, job and awareness to social aspects. Hope real no forces in the country can disturb the racial harmony and everyone will united to develop the nation and its people.

My deep condolence to the victims of Kauhajoki School Shooting in Finland

Finland is one of the peace and safe country to live, I still strongly believe on this reality though there was recently one fearful and deadly school shooting happened and that took 10 innocent lives. It was a so horrible day for this peace and civilized country. The similar and same nature school shooting was also happened last year November 2007 in Tuusula near Helsinki and took 9 lives of innocent students. There should be a grave and necessary investigation, research and some measure to prevent such happenings in the coming future. Why young people are getting influence and fascinated by such kind of violence thinking and frustration? I think, There should be some kind of research is needed for not to happen such incident in future. In my opinion as a well-wisher of Finland and Finnish people that gun law should not be so much liberal, it’s true that Finland has a long tradition of hunting and gun ownership is common here. But there should be some measure to gun law not to allow to use for violence and unnecessary activity or game, and it should not be so much liberal to young people, mainly, teenagers. Psychology condition, age, responsibility and necessity of gun can be a base to grant licenses to the gun ownership. Now, I deeply pray my condolence to those who lost their lives on this shooting and may their soul rest in a peace

Some suggestions to Dr.Bhattarai for Upcoming budget.

Only political change is not a people demand, we need revolution on economy also; that people want to see from current Maoist led government. Now, Prachanda and Baburam are the leaders, on whose leadership we expect and believe the revolution on economy of the country. In the past, Lack of influential, far-sighted, visionary leadership, Corruption, delay, carelessness, mismanagement, unfair, over politicition and lack of strong desire to do something in government, government officers and staff was the main obstacle for the development of the country. Nepal needs a phase wise plan and its strict implementation and good result that are very necessary to develop the nation. Water resources, Tourism, Agriculture, herbs, Information technology, woolen and garment can be a major economic pivotal in Nepal. So, we need to do research and formulate plan and policy to develop these fields. I hope Dr. Babaram Bhattarai already have some idea to manipulate our resources as mention above. I am Information Technology student and IT is the major global economic sector now. It’s growing everywhere. ICT sector can play a major economic role for the economic development of the country. India is achieving great economic success in IT. Outsourcing, software development, ICT service generation and production of IT skills man power are the main success story of Indian IT development. We can also develop ICT sector in Nepal. We have many IT graduates from domestic universities as well as from abroad. Many Nepali students have good programming skill that is very important also. We just need a leadership , policy, infrastructure, encourage and support financially from government , if government do so, then I hope there will be more investment on this sector and more companies will be established with a confident of success. We should talk about the revolution on IT also. Dr. Bhattrai should have planned to make initiative for the revolution on ICT sector. IT can be a major sector for economic activity because of more jobs and demanding around the world. This is 21st century ICT driven world. It will be worthless if we only talk about the agriculture revolution or something like this. We should think and plan about the revolution on IT and it is 21st century. Nepal also can do a lot in the field of Information Technology, Nepali youth are very interested to make career in the field of IT and there will more jobs in this field. The use and application of IT is huge and diverse also, we can not industrlized the country until we develop IT because most of modern technology on industry is based on IT. I hope Dr. Bhattrai have a good vision to develop the IT sector. We always support if there is good initiative from government. Government should have policy to return back home those talented youth who are living and working in abroad. So, all people will help to effort of development of the country. I hope New budget will show the bright future of Nepal.

Mahabir Pun asking for your help on 'One-Dollar-A-Month'

Mahabir Pun has started a campaign - "Donate One Dollar a Month to help Build Broadband Information Highway Across Nepal".

Here is the "Request Letter for One Dollar a Month Campaign". Please read it. Also let Mahabir know if you have any questions regarding the request letter. Please sign up for the campaign.

One-Dollar-A-Month = Information Highway in Rural Nepal

The wireless network project started as an experiment in 2002, essentially using basic home networking equipment to see if Internet connection can be brought to Nangi from Pokhara (the nearest city with an Internet Service Provider). After repeated trial and error, the trick worked, and today in 2008, there are 22 villages villages in three districts of Nepal that are connected via the wireless network.

It takes 8 days to walk through these villages, and now information and news gets shared in seconds. A total population of 22,000, and 7 High Schools with about 1,700 students now have access to news, goods for sale in the surrounding villages, telephone calls using VoIP, basic health care using telemedicine, and better access to education via tele-teaching.

However, there are hundreds of other villages out there that need to be connected. And as need for services grow within the connected villages, it requires better infrastructure, scalable equipment, and more support and maintenance. We believe this will be the foundation for an information highway that will connect all of rural Nepal, and with your help, we can realize this goal sooner than ever.

The One-Dollar-a-Month campaign asks you to donate one dollar each month to build this Information Highway. Show the unity of Nepalis and well-wishers of Nepal by donating $1/month to help build Information Highway using wireless technology in the mountains of Nepal.

Encourage your children to initiate the campaign among their peers in schools so that the children can learn from their early age to be involved in projects like these for good causes.

Welcome Republic Nepal !!

Finally, the autocracy of Shah dynasty in Nepal ends here. Shah dynasty was ruling Nepal from last 240+ years. The last king of Shah dynasty, Gyanendra Shah, not only destroyed the image of entire Shah dynasty but lead to the end of monarchy. His ambitious dream to crash democracy ultimately lead him to loose all of his power and prosperity.

Grandfather of Gyanendra, Tribhuwan Shah and brother of Gyanendra, Birendra Shah were praised by people of Nepal for their commitment and dedication for democracy. Tribhuwan took a very bold step to restore democracy from autocratic Rana families for their hierarchical prime-ministerial system. Birendra on 90s showed his commitment towards democracy and allowed flexible environment for democratic practices. So, these both Shah kings are highly appreciated in Nepal.

But, the latest and last king, Gyanendra came to throne by Royal Massacre in which King Birendra was killed. From the beginning, Gyanendra started to show that he is not committed for constitutional monarchy and wanted to be a part of active political power which Nepalese people never allowed him. Then, he took the power by force. The bloodless coup made him powerful but he did not have any political skills to handle the power. And, the core fact is that Nepalese people never accept autocracy and always believed on democratic exercises. So, people were really disappointed by his active involvement on polities as a king. When he further tighten the people's right and tried limit them as helpless citizen; Nepalese swore to throw him out. When people's voice was heard on the road, he started suppressing the voices. Then, the people committed to dishonor the entire Shah dynasty in order to prevent the growth of another Gyanendra inside the palace. The bullets did not stop the people then. And, today is the day, finally, legally, formally, Shah Dynasty ends from Nepal. Nepal is Republic from today !! Congratulations to all of the Nepalese of inside and outside of Nepal on the day of Republic declaration !! Welcome Republic Nepal !!

Internet Addiction and Online Communities

What engages you most on the Internet? This question is mingling in my mind from last few days. Undoubtedly, Google would be the response of the most of the persons. But, I do believe that except googling, there should be some websites which you surf regularly and more often. It is the website which have been a kind of addiction to you and if you could not manage some time to surf its content for a day, you feel like you are missing something today. There should be some websites which is automatically typed on address bar when you are confused what to surf for. Again, such websites might be a couple of as well. Let me sort out my own:

When I start browsing, I start with Google News. Then I move to BBC News. Now, its time for news related to Nepal. Now it comes, eKantipur, My Sansar, Online Khabar and Himal Khabar. Now emails; GMail, LUT email and Hotmail. Now online communities; Facebook, You Tube. Then, other regular stuffs like study matters, blogs and some occasional stuffs.

But, what repeats the most? hmm... I think, I browse My Sansar, Online Khabar and Facebook more than 10 times a day. I should confess, I will be bit disappointed by Umesh when I could not find any update on My Sansar. He have exams these days, so there are few but fruitful updates. I am really excited by his latest attempt to live broadcast from his blog. Online Khabar, I think, it is one the few online news sites of Nepal to update frequently. Though its news quality is just satisfactory, but, I rely on it for being informed about updates. Facebook is really favorite one online community. I don't know what makes me so attracted towards it, but I really enjoy by showing my presence there. Hanging for a long time in Facebook has been my routine these days. It actually binds me with my friends. Facebook is bridging physical distance with my friends. We are sharing same platform though being on separate continents. I love Facebook.

Web and Internet are a kind of addiction to me. I don't hesitate to declare I am addicted with Internet. And, the newer version of addiction in Internet is Online communities. Whether you talk about Blogs by Blogger and Wordpress or Facebook and Hi5 or even You Tube, Podcast and Flickr; all these online communities are binding us together.

oops, I don't know what I am writing for. I just composed this blog thinking I will share with you about my dependency on Internet, but I ended up piling some boring stuffs. Anyway, sometimes reading boring stuffs also makes fun !! Enjoy !!

Choosing a good master's thesis topic

These days I am struggling to select a good topic for my master's thesis. I am doing my M. Sc. (Tech) in Information and Communication Technology with Software Engineering major. So, it is the time for me to start my master's thesis but I am still undecided which area should I go for.

I have some ideas on my mind but I am not sure how much effective or feasible are those ideas. So, I approached my professors saying please suggest me some thesis topic for me on Software Architecture related field. I was interested to work with current PhD researchers, so I told him to give me some topic for my master's thesis so that my thesis output would be somehow useful for their researches. Then, he proposed me two areas for thesis, first about relationship of Client and Supplier on Tailored Software development process and another the role of architecture on community based software development. I am not much clear about the ideas behind both topics. But I felt, second one topic is somehow more social topic rather than technical. I might be wrong.

I have much interest on research related to Software Re-usability issues, Algorithm Optimization problems and role of architectures in system development process. Basically, I love innovation based researches. But, I do realize that innovative projects for master's thesis are too risky. It is better to talk about innovation after master's degree. When, I asked him to give me a part of work from existing PhD researches, I mean to some more aggressive or ambitious project. But, at the same time, I was scared too that aggression and ambitious projects lead to failure. My previous unfinished research about re-usability suffered the same. I started too aggressively that my idea almost died before being matured due to lack of enough resources. I realized later that I was behaving much childish and immature to jump in blindly. I do not want to repeat the same. It is about Master's thesis and I don't want to spoil my master's degree.

I don't know why, but my mind is still stuck on the topic around the role of architectures in system development process. I want to focus on process refinement on software development keeping the software architecture on the center of development process and want to analyze the impact and role of architecture during the development process. But, it seems that no one other is doing PhD research on the similar area, at least in my University, www.lut.fi. I found some master level thesis focused on architectural issues, but they are moreover limited to some specific model but no the process itself.

Today, entire day I spend by surfing the website of various SE focused universities, but none of them gave me much confidence to build my confident on my idea. Carnegie Melon, http://www.sei.cmu.edu/, have a wide area of software engineering researches and that gave me somehow idea about what type of architectural issues are relevant for master level researches. But, I am still undecided.

Tomorrow, I have meeting with my supervisor. Let's see how it goes. He told me, he will advise me some topic from above mentioned two projects if possible. I am still hopeful of getting some satisfactory topic from those projects. But, I am sure about it that I am not going to compromise with some kind of ok-type topic for my thesis and the decisive factor will remain, the topic must satisfy me fully. Because I believe that I can explore my potential on the topic which really interests me. Wish me Luck !!

After the drama of ISPs to stop ADSL

I was closely watching the drama of private ISPs to stop Nepal Telecom
to launch ADSL service and really frustrated by the acts they
performed in order to stop NT.

NT announced ADSL much before but they could not launch it before
just because of the protest of those ISPs. Worldlink and Mercantile
came in front on protest and used their political power to stop NT.
Unfortunately, they became successful.

Again, this time, NT made another effort to launch ADSL service. This
time, after several efforts to stop NT and failure to convince the
authorities, private ISPs went to court to stop NT.

Private ISPs were charging around 6000-13000 NRS per month for high
speed Internet (but actually, due to bandwidth shaping, you won't get
high speed). But, NT proposed to provide the same with 900-2700 NRS.
And, NT exposes the fact that with this prices, they will make a
profit of 11%. It brought the fact out that how much these private
ISPs are looting the customers. Mr. Pawan Shakya from ISP association
on a press meet presented the logic that, "they are not against the
speed service and price actually, but they fear that Internet might
not be available and users might face the scarcity of the service
exactly as the shortage of petrol which customers faces now due to low
price in comparison with the cost price". I don't understand the
logical link between the shortage of petrol and the slicing of price
on Internet. Neither I understood how they can say that proposed price
is below the cost prices since NT says the price makes profit of 11%
to them.

At the end, NT won the case from the court. Then, the
Telecommunication Authority also mediated among private ISPs and NT
about the service. Previously, NT had taken stand not to share their
cabling infrastructure and resources with private ISPs but after the
mediation of of NTA (Authority), it agreed to share it with local ISPs
as well in return of full support of local ISPs for its ADSL and
further high speed Internet projects.

This issue will make a substantial difference on customer rights as
well. But, again, the chances of monopoly still remains until some
other local ISPs launches similar service. This issue also brought the
fact in front that local ISPs are never serious about services they
are providing, but they are only focusing on their profit margins.

Russia and Winter School, a fairy tale

When I left Finland for Russia, I had an imagination of similar country and culture waiting for me on the other side of the border, but it did not remain the same after arriving. Our Coordinator had already fed enough fear on in my mind about Russia. I was not supposed to drink the water directly from tap as I used to do in Finland. I was not supposed to enjoy the evening and night life there. Russian friends of Lappeenranta had already warned to be more careful and not to interact with unnecessary people there. "You can get robbed so easily there, you won't even notice that you are already robbed", one of my Russian friends told me before leaving to Russia. The well heard quote was bugging me in my mind, "Everything is supposed to be normal, but you never know, since Russia is always Russia".

When train left me on Saint Petersburg train station, the only thing was in my mind was the fear fed by different people. But, there came an angel with bright smile on her face. She guided me with very warm welcome. She helped me on every stage on leading to hotel, dealing with dinner menu, translating Russian to English and making a way to communicate with people. In deed, she was an angel who helped on every aspect. She was also one of the students of Winter School, so, she helped on very friendly manner being conscious on very small details to make my Russia trip unforgettable. It was growing a sense of security inside me, fading out the fear of my mind. Another few days made me really comfortable with Russia. University people, teachers and all of my friends here helped me a lot to wash out the fear about Russia. I was being much comfortable with it. But all days did not remain as I felt during those first few days. I got very 'exciting' opportunities to explore Russia.

Winter School 2008
I was very excited about winter school and its contents. I was highly encouraged for a new flavor of studies and education system. Meantime, the day came, when Prof. Evgeny I. Veremey started our first lesson on 'Introduction to Digital systems'. He was really a good professor. His teaching style and caring about whether students are understanding his lectures or not was really good point which we hardly get even in Finnish Education system. Prof. Varemey was really a good professor. But, my happiness did not last a long when we started second session with Prof. Vitaly Klyuev from University of Aizu, Japan. Primarily, I thought, I was the only one who was having difficulty on understanding his tone of language. But, later on, after discussing with other participants of the session, I realized, everybody was facing the same problem. I am sorry to say so, but I could understand neither pronunciation nor tone of his language. He was teaching "Introduction to Information Retrieval", which was very interesting subject for me, but, I could not get expected input from him. But, our third lecture on "Document Clustering" by Prof. Vladimir Dobrynin fulfilled the gap. He was another wonderful professor with enormous idea about the subject and very comfortable technique to make it understandable to students about the content. Study was our primary motive of this Russia trip. So, it was really good enough to gain new knowledge for me.

Managing Time
I had different perception about Winter School. Might be, I expected too much from it. I thought, the primary motive of Winter school was to familiarize with Russian culture, tradition and historic city along with the study. I did not mean to underestimate the importance of study during those period. But, I felt, I was abandoned to hotel just like, do what ever you want and we don't have any obligations towards you except inside the classroom. One of the CBU student, the angel, took us to University every day from Hotel and brought us back on a local bus. She really struggle enough to manage comfortableness for us on our journey though she was also one of the students of Winter School. No body came and care about what we were eating on dinner and breakfast during those ten days. She really fought with them and argued a lot to manage better breakfast and dinner as they are provided by Hotel. She translated each items of the menu for us in each individual morning and evening and discussed with them about our necessity and interest. We were supposed to take dinner by 7:00 evening. So, at any cost, I needed to be there in Hotel by 7:00 as the restaurant closes down on 8:00. So, what after 8:00, I didn't have Internet on hotel. I didn't have English channel on TV. I didn't have any study materials in English in hotel. The only solution was to engage myself with the my laptop without Internet for regular 10 days. Other days, I tried to manage by downloading some study materials from college and spending time with them during evening and night. It is very interesting that our schedule is very much tight on college as well. I had classes till 17:15. Then, we are free to use Internet and computer for our own purposes. I believe, everybody realizes the need of using Internet for personal purposes is also really important. But, I was allowed only for next 45 minutes. After 18:00, either there would be some other classes on the room or some other difficulties. And, I didn't have any other alternative computer labs to work for me. I needed to do project and I needed to do it within the same time table. Definitely, we could not do it, so we canceled the half day visiting program of Saturday to allocate time for project since we did not have another computer labs available for us to work after 18:00.

Visiting Petersburg city
I was asked to arrive city center on Sunday to enjoy the city panorama. The angel took us there with the same local bus. The university people were waiting there for us. They took us to Hermitage Museum. They paid for entrance ticket. The museum was really wonderful. It showed the history of Russia with wonderful paintings and scriptures. I felt, I saw something that is really memorable throughout my life. It was really wonderful experience. Then, they led us to a historic church. It was also too good. The internals of the church was so beautifully decorated and painted. I was really in praising the historicity of the city. Then the university people disappeared. Now, I was led by the same and wonderful guide, the angel. She took me to many interesting parts of the city. Then, we went to view the high tide on the river. We climbed upstairs of a church to have bird's view of Saint Petersburg City. The view was simply awesome. Wind was very strong, it was pushing us backwards and we struggle enough to walk forward. It was really wonderful experience.

The tragedy
While going back to hotel from Petersburg city on Sunday, I need to take metro train first before getting the local bus. It was my fourth metro travel on Saint Petersburg, so I was being more comfortable with it. But this time crowd was bit more. Me and one of my friends Idres were getting inside the train. Three Russian young guys were behind us. When we just stepped inside the train, they pushed us so abnormally, so I took out my left hand from the pocket and get support of Idres to resist their pressure from behind. There were no other people behind them, so its really unnatural to me that why they pushed me. My right hand was still inside the right pocket of my jeans. It contained my purse which contains my cards, bank information, student details and some Russian currency. I had just now taken out my left hand from pocket which contains a Camera to resist their pressure. Immediately after few seconds, I felt an unknown hand inside my right pocket. I immediately caught that hand and jerked it out of my pocket. After jerking his hand out of my pocket, all of those three guys immediately get off from the train. I turned my head to view his face. He was showing some wired expressions. Suddenly I remembered my left pocket which contained my Camera. I had just now taken out my hands to resist their pushing pressure from behind. Unfortunately, Camera was not there. They were already successful. Though I was successful on protecting my purse, I had already lost my Camera. I was really surprised by their courage that they tried to sweep out both of my pockets. It all happened within maximum 2 minutes. But now, its too late, since the speed train had already taken its speed and those 'courageous' robbers won't be waiting me back to return it. I was speechless. I was expressionless.

Camera, for me, is very important. It was one of my best friends. I really enjoy photography. And, that was only the camera I had these days. The realization that I won't be able to buy any new camera in immediate new future really scared me that I would be living without a camera. My friend's warning was repeatedly bugging me in my mind like, 'I had told you before'. "Anything can happen in Russia, be alive", "You will get robbed in a flash that you won't even notice that you are already robbed" and "Russia is always Russia" were making an iterative loop inside my mind for reminding my carelessness and my foolishness to being confident on new place. I was laughing myself for my foolishness that I lost it because of my feeling it secure and comfortable on new place despite of several warnings of my Russian friends of Lappeenranta.

Saint Petersburg, two distinct experiences

When I left Finland for Russia, I had an imagination of similar country and culture waiting for me on the other side of the border, but it did not remain the same after arriving. Our Coordinator had already fed enough fear on in my mind about Russia. I was not supposed to drink the water directly from tap as I used to do in Finland. I was not supposed to enjoy the evening and night life there. Russian friends of Lappeenranta had already warned to be more careful and not to interact with unnecessary people there. "You can get robbed so easily there, you won't even notice that you are already robbed", one of my friends told me. The well heard quote was bugging me in my mind, "Everything is supposed to go be normal, but you never know, since Russia is always Russia".

She was also one of the students of Winter School, so, she helped on very friendly manner being conscious on very small details to make our Russia trip unforgettable. It was growing a sense of security inside me fading out the fear of my mind. Another two days made me really comfortable with Russia. University people, teachers and all of my friends here helped me a lot to wash out the fear about Russia. I was being much comfortable with it. Then, another day came, the Sunday, gloomy Sunday!

We left for City Center with much eagerness to visit the heart of Saint Petersburg. We took a bus which was almost empty. Then, we took metro train, which was also almost empty. We went to Hermitage Museum. It was really a wonderful masterpiece collection of paintings, arts and scriptures. It was really wonderful. Then we went to view the high tide on the river. The wind storm was pushing us backwards. We struggle enough to walk forward. Then, we visited a very wonderful church. We climbed up to have bird's view of Saint Petersburg City. The view was simply awesome. The wind was very strong, it was pushing us backwards. It was a wonderful experience. It gave me an unforgettable moment. I must admit, this city is far better than Lappeenranta and even Helsinki, though I havn't visited much areas of Helsinki. It is really beautiful city.

Now, I need to take metro train for another destination. It was my fourth metro travel on Saint Petersburg, so I was being more comfortable with it. But this time crowd was bit more. Me and one of my friends Idres were getting inside the train. Three Russain young guys were behind us. I immediately turned my head to view his face. He was showing some wired expressions. Suddenly I remembered my left pocket which contained my Camera. I had just now taken out my hands to resist their pushing pressure from behind. Unfortunately, Camera was not there. They were already partially successful. Though I was successful on protecting my purse, I had already lost my Camera. I was really surprised by their courage that they tried to sweep out both of my pockets. It all happened within maximum 2 minutes. But now, its too late, since the speed train had already taken its speed and those'courageous' rubbers won't be waiting me back to return it. I was speechless. I was expressionless.

Camera, for me, is very important. It was one of my best friends. I really enjoy photography. And, that was only the camera I had these days. The realization that I won't be able to buy any new camera in immediate new future really scared me that I would be living without a camera. I was laughing myself for my foolishness that I lost it because of my feeling it secure and comfortable on new place despite of several warnings of my Russian friends of Lappenranta.

I started making sounds inside the train since I was in a shock of loosing it. I started communicated with my friends about the rubbery since I was really scared now. And, more importantly, Camera was really something meaningful to me. Friends were giving me some sympathy. Some were suggesting me to search it better to confirm the rubbery. I was damm sure about it, since, I felt his hand on another of my pocket and my another hand was inside the pocket as well and I was playing with one of the button of the camera inside my pocket. I felt, its obvious and natural for me to be shocked and making sound. Train stopped on another station. An older women came to me. She told me very politely (?) "You are too noisy." I was really surprised to hear that. I am sure she understand english since she told me that in English. If so, she must have understood I was rubbed on her homeland. Then, what should I suppose to do? Dance with happiness for celebration of loosing it? Get happy and laugh for being happily rubbed? OR get very silent and accept the fact I am rubbed. For me, its not natural and normal to be rubbed like this. And, I wanted to ask her, what should I suppose to do Madam? But I could not, since she did not have passion to get my response back and already walked now. Again, I remembered our coordinator, "Anything can happen in Russia !".
